Cutting Edge Tooling
Utilizing Ceramic to Remove High Nickel Material
Chandler Industries serves customers in the Aerospace, Defense, Industrial and Medical markets. Each component we produce has unique characteristics that require us to specify certain tools to optimize cutting performance and efficiency. Recently, we invested in developing a solution for dealing with the challenges of machining high tolerance products made of cast Inconel material. As you may know, Inconel is a nickel alloy containing nickel, chromium and iron. It is commonly utilized in high temperature and high pressure applications such as jet engines. Traditional Carbide tooling is impractical to use for the entire machining process of Inconel, as the Carbide tooling wears out too quickly, ultimately increasing cost and producing process variability. In this case, our engineers decided to apply their knowledge of Ceramic tooling as an alternative.
As you can see from the video, Ceramic tooling can be a great solution when dealing with tough materials for high tolerance applications because it optimizes the shear zone and holds up to higher temperatures. The result is longer tool life and more stable tool performance, which in turn provides more value and consistency for our customers who require Inconel products.
